The materials used for the construction of fiber shafts are essentially three: carbon, Kewlar and fiberglass (different types).
Carbon is used for extreme stiffness (raw graphite) or medium stiffness (carbon plotted).
Kewlar instead, thanks to its mechanical resistance, gives structure and body to the shaft.
Transparent fiberglass is used as the first and last layer of protection.
A fiber shaft consists of several layers of Kevlar fibers, loved and soaked in resin. These fibers are baked in the oven to obtain a conical tube with a thickness of one tenth.
The placement of the material for position and quantity defines the technical characteristics such as weight and stiffness.
Once you have the tube, it is adjusted, cut to the correct size and filled with polyurethane sponges to improve the acoustics during the game. After this operation you need to install the coupling, ferrule and tip.
Even if fiber and wood are used for the same purpose, these two types of shafts are completely different from the structural and mechanical point of wiev.
A fiber shaft puts much more pressure on the ball than a wooden shaft, even if the weight is the same.
The game is especially easier for 5 Skilles and other technical disciplines.
In a wooden shaft the force is distributed from the wood mass, instead into a fiber shaft, it is all propagated from the shaft where the fiber is located.
The Longoni joint range is made up of two different types: VP2 or wooden joint (BJ or WJ). The wooden connection (used only in the carom game) is the classic one and ensures a smooth play to the cue without changing the balance and weight. The VP2 joint is more precise and gives determination to the game, with a little frontal balance: it is made of titanium grade 5 (the hardest) or stainless steel in case weight is not an essential point. The female part of the VP2 connection for the shafts is available in brass or in ergal (a special aluminum alloy) to find the best way to balance cue and shaft: this choice is made by us based on the needs of the customer. On request you can also order cues with custom joints for other brands.
